Washburne Culinary Arts & Hospitality Institute is one of the oldest culinary schools in the nation and is part Kennedy-King College one of the City Colleges of Chicago. Washburne provides students with the latest culinary and baking techniques, along with essential hands-on experience to ensure they are equipped to work in Chicago’s most successful restaurants, hotels, private clubs and other culinary establishments.

Washburne Culinary & Hospitality Institute is one of City Colleges of Chicago’s College to Careers sites, where we are working with industry leaders to ensure our curriculum will provide students with the skills that are most important and valuable in the working world.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: This position provides academic leadership, development and the maintenance of educational programs focusing on Culinary Arts. This position also assists the Dean, College to Careers in providing leadership and management for the program. In addition, assists the Dean in the planning, organizing, and directing the operation, staffing, and budgeting needs of the Hospitality and Culinary cluster.

  • Identifies and recommends staffing needs to the Dean, College to Careers. Interviews and recommends to the Dean, selection of part-time faculty and training specialists. Evaluates part-time faculty and training specialists and make recommendations regarding retention and non-retention.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive orientation program for part-time faculty and training specialist, in conjunction with the Office of Human Resources at the College and the District Office.
  • Responsible for oversight of and accountable for meeting recruitment, retention and graduation targets of students in the Culinary Arts component of the Hospitality and Culinary program.
  • Responsible for the recommendation and development of new courses, workshops and certificate programs for the Culinary Arts component of the Hospitality and Culinary College to Careers Cluster based on enrollment data analysis, market trends and community assessment.
  • Manages the Culinary Arts department and its overall operations through direct supervision of key staff and provides necessary guidance of staff to ensure proper operation of programs.
  • Provides for an effective two-way channel of communication between the College administration and faculty to ensure the integrity of the educational programs, the currency of the offerings, and the innovation of appropriate new technologies within the department. Aggressively pursues and follows through with issues of concern and assists in resolving problems.
  • Serves as a hearing officer regarding student complaints and recommends appropriate procedures for their resolution.
  • Prepares and develops budgets for the division in cooperation with the Business Office. Assists the Dean in monitoring the budget. Develops and implements procedures for the request, purchase and maintenance of the instructional equipment and supplies and ensures the maintenance of accurate inventory control.
  • Works with the Registrar’s Office to facilitate seamless registration processes for Culinary Arts students consistent with District policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates and directs the assessment, evaluation, review and implementation of innovative curriculum additions and revisions, course outlines and syllabi and textbook selection.
  • Writes proposals to seek external funding for specific projects and initiatives that require support beyond the District’s capabilities.
  • Works with the Office of Research to plan and implement routine research concerning the numbers, status and success of course offerings, prepares reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends and makes appropriate recommendations and /or conclusions.
  • Uses computer software to prepare memoranda and spreadsheet reports detailing activities and statistics.
  • Represents the college to community organizations and agencies and participates on district-wide committees.
  • Pays attention to detail in all aspects of each assignment to ensure accuracy of information and reports.
  • Serves as weekend and/or evening administrator for the College. 
  • Adheres to CCC Customer Service Excellence standards.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Education, Education leadership, Business/Public Administration, Workforce or related degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required. Previous supervisory experience preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in food service management, culinary arts and/or hospitality setting.
  • Experience as an instructor and/or administrator in an academic setting preferred.
  • Previous experience with computer information management systems and budget management. Previous experience in writing grants.
  • Must work well with employees at all levels of the organization, in addition to students and other customers. Must be able to handle all situations with tact, persuasiveness, and diplomacy.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills necessary. Must be able to effectively represent the college and district, at various meetings. Must be able to conduct research, analyze data, and prepare clear and thorough reports.
  • Excellent organizational and administrative skills.
  • Must be self-directed and innovative, able to assess current operations in an effort to improve the future goals of the College. Must be able to meet deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Must be computer proficient with knowledge of a variety of software programs.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Availability to work some evenings and weekends. In and out of District travel may be required.
