Big Shoulders Fund

Big Shoulders Fund is continuing to accept applications for  Brighter Future Award 2013. A scholarship lottery aimed at investing in our young scholars in these crucial times for education in Englewood. The Brighter Future Award is a scholarship of up to $3,500 dollars to attend a Big Shoulders Fund school  of your choice anywhere in the city of Chicago. (see here) The Brighter Future Award aims to assist those student who are currently enrolled at closing,Level 3 and/or “on probation” school.  The scholarship typically represents 70% to 100% of tution cost depending on school and is auto-renewing for each academic school year up to 8th grade!   Previous students who have received Big Shoulders Fund scholarships have been put on the fast track to attend some of the nation's best Colleges and Universities.

Just in time for summer: The Violence Stops Here Campaign committee is offering free workshops providing instruction on preparing contest entries and even tips for turning their stories into and online animation and live performance via devised theater in Chicago. The first workshop:

The Violence Stops Here workshops will also be featured at Crime Scene Chicago: Let Hope Rise this summer with Collaboraction Theatre group at Chicago Park District's new Night Out in the Parks program at the following parks:

? July 12-13: LeClaire -Hearst Park, 5120 W. 44th St.
? July 26-27: Sherman Park , 1301 W. 52nd St.
? August 16-17: Hamilton Park , 513 W. 72nd St.
? August 23-24: Austin Town Hall Park , 5610 W. Lake St.

Last year Lyric Johnson of Kenwood Academy won the grand prize $2,500 Larry
Underwood Scholarship for Creative Excellence. Returning competitor Zana
Carter of Simeon Academy won $750 as 2nd runner-up and STV Youth from
Institute for Positive Living won 3rd place.

This is the third year of the Violence Stops Here campaign and contest. VSH13 is funded by the Urban Initiative Plan: part of the City of Chicago Responsible Retailer Initiative. Member retailers donate to UIP to support youth-driven entertainment programs that serve to change the image of the community.
