Improve the present and prepare for the future. Make a better tomorrow by doing good now. Ideas that accomplish this ideal of progress are founded in unique ingenuity and leadership. The Washburne Culinary Institute exhibits exactly those traits. The Institute is both a school and a business, teaching students while it generates income for the community. The history and purpose of Washburne Culinary Institute are best explained on its own website:
Founded more than 75 years ago, Washburne Culinary Institute is one of the oldest culinary schools in the nation. Headquartered on 63rd and Halsted on the City Colleges of Chicago Kennedy-King campus, Washburne provides students with the latest culinary techniques, along with essential hands-on experience to ensure they are equipped to work in Chicago’s most successful restaurants, hotels, private clubs and other culinary establishments.
According to the site, in addition to the school, Washburne Culinary Institute also operates a number of business ventures throughout the city. Englewood’s own Sikia Resteraunt is again best described by the Washburne Culinary Institute site itself:
Global contemporary cuisine prepared by senior-level Washburne Culinary Institute students; a three-course lunch, featuring an appetizer, entree and dessert for only $7 (excluding beverage, tax and gratuity; and a serene, streamlined decor featuring unique African artwork.
Sikia Restaurant is housed by Kennedy-King College at 740 W 63rd Street. Open Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays between 11am and 1pm, space fills quickly. Make a reservation by calling 773.602.5200. Visit the Washburne Culinary Institute website for more information at washburnculinary.com
