Summary:

The National Children’s Study (NCS) is a national study of the health and development of children in the United States. The Greater Chicago Study Center which is a consortium of Northwestern University, The University of Illinois School of Public Health, the University of Chicago and NORC is conducting the study in Cook County, IL, one of the 105 locations selected for the NCS across the US.  

The position of Neighborhood Ambassador is an hourly, part-time position, based in Cook County, IL.  The people hired as Neighborhood Ambassadors will know, and be well known in, their community. They will promote and provide information about the NCS at a very local level. They will make connections with community organizations and leaders and identify and attend events through local churches, neighborhood and parent organizations, and health fairs.  In some instances they will represent the study independently, and sometimes they will accompany a full-time NCS Community Outreach staff member.  At least once each week and more frequently if needed, they will inform the NCS Community Outreach team about upcoming events in the community and the needs of the community for materials and the presence of the Community Outreach team.

Neighborhood Ambassadors will receive a paid initial 3-hour training including NCS overview and general messages.  Additional training or monthly briefings will be conducted as needed. This position is funded under federal contracts.

Salary: Neighborhood Ambassadors will be paid on an hourly basis ($12.27/hr). Hours will vary, nights and weekends - flexibility will be needed.  No benefits are provided.

Qualifications & Experience:

Excellent communication and presentation skills. Ability to use internet. High school diploma, or equivalent, and some related experience. Concern about mothers and babies (maternal and child) health and well-being. Preferred experience: Currently or previously active with PTA or other parent group, neighborhood organization, health or environmental organization. Ability to speak and be understood in English, as well as a language other than English.
