November Englewood Village Meeting – RECAP
R.A.G.E.
Published: December 8, 2017
R.A.G.E. hosted its last Englewood Village Meeting of 2017 at Johnson College Prep, 6350 S. Stewart, on Tuesday, November 21st. At the meeting, more than 50 attendees received highly informative community updates including presentations on new community projects plus an impassioned discussion about the proposed new $75 million High School in Englewood lead by R.A.G.E President, Aysha Butler. Guest speakers included Alderman Sawyer of the 6th Ward and Anton Seals Jr. of Grow Greater Englewood.
Alderman Sawyer explained the 2FM project, the Department of Fleet and Facility Management’s (2FM) construction of a new facility in Englewood. Attendees asked about employment, facility impact on the neighborhood, and the company handling construction. Alderman Sawyer answered, “Ujamaa Construction Co. will lead the construction and that he is excited to see more jobs come to the community.” He also added that there will be several hiring events as well. Anton Seals, Jr of Grow Greater Englewood gave a presentation on their efforts to cultivate a healthy, resilient food system and economy in Englewood. He also provided updates on the Englewood Line Trail, the proposed 1.7 mile trail for recreation located along the elevated former rail structure between Hoyne Avenue and Halsted St near 59th St. Pictured above is the trail at the viaduct on 58th St. & Wood St.
Aysha Butler discussed her recent meetings with students at the proposed closing schools in Englewood. Chicago Public School data on the enrollment trends of those schools highlighting their dramatic enrollment decline was distributed to all in attendance. Aysha explained that all of these schools lost almost half of its student population resulting in some students not having required science classes or art. “The city has failed these students,” she said. “We have failed them the way we’ve allowed this broke system to continue in our city and so this is our outcome, that basically the community doesn’t have a neighborhood school,” said Aysha.
