Alzheimer’s Conference Reaches out to African-American Community
African-Americans are two to three times more likely than Caucasians to develop Alzheimer’s disease[1]. To increase awareness the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter in partnership with the South Side Dementia Consortium will present You Are Not Alone: Supporting Caregivers of Loved Ones with Memory Loss Conference, Saturday, October 15 from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Kennedy-King College, 740 West 63Street in Chicago.
Expert speakers will address the medical, legal, and financial aspects of managing this illness. In addition, professionals in the areas of adult day services, home care services, supportive and long-term care options, respite, hospice, and related city and state services will participate in a panel discussion on these topics. Guided support sessions, a resource fair, boxed lunch, door prizes and free parking will also be available.
Rita Mitchell is a caregiver for her mother who has Vascular Dementia. Ms. Mitchell has attended the annual conference for the past six years and has this to say about her experience, “The first thing you will realize is that you are not alone! For those who don’t know much about memory loss or are new to caregiving, this is a treasure-trove of information. And for those who are seasoned caregivers, there is always something new to learn. You find camaraderie with those whom are on a similar journey. I have also found that it is important for people to find the humor in caregiving, and this conference lets you mingle and share stories about your struggles and helps foster an atmosphere of support, inspiration and hope.”
In 2010 were more than a half-million caregivers inIllinoisthat provided 659,939,981 hours of unpaid care that resulted in an economic value of $7,873,083,975! These numbers will continue to increase at drastic rates as the Baby Boomers age and more people take on the role of a family caregiver. This conference will provide an opportunity for those taking care of loved ones to receive vital information that will help them.
